Best Quilt Shops by State: How We Rank Them (2026)

"Best quilt shop in Colorado" is a question with no honest single answer, so we are not going to give you one. What we can give you is a list you can check: the shops in every state that quilters rate highest on Google, filtered to real quilt, fabric, and sewing businesses, with the rule for making the cut written out. Use it as a shortlist, not a verdict.

The short answer:

For each state we take every quilt, fabric, or sewing shop listed on QuiltMap with a Google rating of 4.8 or higher and at least 40 reviews, then sort by review count and keep the top five. That gives 47 states and 219 shops as of September 2026. Three states (Vermont, Wyoming, North Dakota) and the District of Columbia have no shop that clears the bar in our data yet. 1. The method, exactly

Every "best of" list has a method; most just do not tell you what it is. Ours, so you can argue with it:

That is the whole thing. No paid placement, no editor's picks, no adjustment for shops that have claimed their listing. The list regenerates from the data on every site build, so a shop that crosses 40 reviews next month shows up next month.

2. What a Google rating does and doesn't tell you

A Google rating is a customer-service score. It tells you whether people left the store happy: whether the cutting counter was friendly, whether the machine repair came back fixed, whether the class was worth the money. That is worth knowing. It is not the same as "best quilt shop."

The biggest distortion is volume. A high-traffic shop collects every kind of review, including the one-star from the person who was annoyed about parking, and settles around 4.5 or 4.6. A small shop with a devoted following sits at 4.9 forever. A 4.6 with 700 reviews can easily be a better shop than a 4.9 with 45 — Hancock's of Paducah is a 4.4 with 719 reviews, and it is one of the most-visited fabric stores in the country. This is why we show the review count next to every rating and why the largest shops guide is a separate page.

A few patterns worth noticing. Regional sewing-machine dealers dominate some states outright — Rocky Mountain Sewing & Vacuum holds three of Colorado's five spots, Quality Sewing & Vacuum four of Washington's, Montavilla Sewing Centers three of Oregon's. That is not a flaw in the method; it is what customers in those states rate highest. Nevada's top two, Sew Yeah Quilting (2,375 reviews) and Quiltique (771), have more reviews than the entire top five of most states combined. And Louisville, Kentucky puts three shops in its state's top five, all at 4.9 or 5.0 — an unusually deep quilt-shop town.

None of these is a judgment on the shop. If a listing is missing or wrong, submit or correct it; if the Google rating on a listing is stale, the next scrape picks up the new number.

FAQ

Why isn't my favorite shop on the list?

Almost certainly the rating threshold (4.8 or higher), the review threshold (40 or more), or a missing rating in our data. Open the shop's listing and check which. A shop at 4.7 with 500 reviews is a great shop that our line happens to exclude; a shop with no rating just needs its Google profile linked, which you can suggest from the listing.

How do I get a shop added or corrected?

Use the submit form for a shop we do not list, or the suggest-an-edit link on any listing for a fix. Owners can claim their listing to manage it directly. Submissions are reviewed by a person and usually go live within a couple of days.

How often does this page update?

The list is generated from the directory data on each site build, which happens whenever listings change — usually several times a week. Google ratings themselves refresh when we re-scrape a region, which is less often, so a shop's count here can lag Google by a few months.

Are these the ratings on QuiltMap or on Google?

Google. QuiltMap has its own reviews from quilters on every listing, but there are not enough of them yet to rank on. When there are, we will say so and show both.

Why are so many "sew and vac" stores on a quilt-shop list?

Because quilters shop there, and because machine dealers earn reviews from every repair and every machine sale, which piles up volume fast. Most of the dealers on this list also carry quilting cotton and run classes. If you want fabric-only shops, the state directories let you see the whole field.

Can a shop pay to be on this list?

No. Promoted listings exist elsewhere on QuiltMap and are labeled. This page is generated from ratings and review counts only.
