The Largest Quilt Shops in America (by State)

1. What "largest" even means

Ask five quilters which shop is the biggest in their state and you will get five answers, because they are measuring five different things:

• Floor space. The number a shop puts on its own website. Useful, but a 15,000-square-foot store that is half classroom and half machine showroom has less fabric than a packed 5,000-square-foot one.
• Bolt count. What most quilters actually mean. Almost nobody publishes it, and the shops that do count differently (do precuts count? does the sale room?).
• Review volume. The one thing we can measure. Google review counts are a rough proxy for how many people walk through the door, which is why the table in section 5 exists.
• Destination pull. Whether people plan vacations around it. Hamilton, Missouri is a town of a couple thousand people; the reason it has a row of quilt shops is that quilters fly in.
• Multi-store footprint. A regional chain with six locations is "bigger" as a business than any single storefront, but no one location is the largest shop.

We do not have square footage or bolt counts in our data for any shop, and we are not going to make them up. What follows uses two kinds of evidence: shops that are widely regarded as destinations by quilters nationally, and shops that describe themselves as the largest in their state or region — quoted as their own words, not ours.

2. The national destinations

Four places come up over and over when quilters talk about the trip they want to take. Each is more than one shop; it is a town or a county where quilting has become the main event.

• Hamilton, Missouri — Missouri Star Quilt Company. The most famous quilt destination in the country. What started as a small family business grew into a main street of themed shops, each building devoted to a different slice of fabric, plus retreat lodging. It is the closest thing quilting has to a theme park, and people arrive by the busload.
• Paducah, Kentucky — Hancock's of Paducah (Google rating 4.4, 719 reviews). Paducah is home to the National Quilt Museum and the AQS QuiltWeek show, and Hancock's is the warehouse-scale fabric store quilters pair with the trip. The rating is lower than the boutique shops on this page; that is normal for a high-volume store with a big mail-order side.
• Shipshewana, Indiana — Lolly's Fabrics (Google rating 4.8, 146 reviews). Northern Indiana Amish country is a quilt-tourism town in its own right: quilt gardens, quilt shows, and several fabric stores within walking distance. Lolly's is the anchor most quilters name first.
• Lancaster County, Pennsylvania — The Old Country Store in Intercourse (Google rating 4.7, 351 reviews). The county has Amish-made quilts for sale everywhere, but this is the fabric store quilters actually shop at, with a dense cluster of other shops within a short drive — see the Pennsylvania rows in best shops by state.

Two more belong in the same conversation even if they are single shops rather than towns: Gruber's Quilt Shop in Waite Park, Minnesota, widely cited as one of the largest quilt shops in the Midwest, and Fabric Shack in Waynesville, Ohio, a long-standing destination storefront outside Cincinnati. One caveat on Fabric Shack: our listing is currently labeled "online only" (Google rating 4.8, 173 reviews). Call before you drive.

3. State by state: the shops we can name

These are the states where we can point to a specific shop with a straight face. "Basis" tells you why it is on the list: a national reputation, the shop's own claim, or review volume. Ratings are Google ratings as listed on QuiltMap in September 2026.

If your state is not in the table, it is not because it has no big shops. It is because we do not have a defensible basis for naming one. See the next section, and use the best-rated shops by state list, which covers 47 states.

4. States where we don't have a clear answer

People search "largest quilt shop in" a handful of states more than any others. Here is where we honestly stand on each:

• Georgia. No shop in our data makes a "largest quilt shop" claim. Tiny Stitches in Marietta is the best-reviewed quilt shop (4.8, 299 reviews); the "South's largest" claim belongs to a decorator-fabric warehouse down the road. If you know a Georgia shop with a bigger floor, tell us.
• Wisconsin. 184 shops listed, strong retreat culture, and no single shop that stands out on our evidence as the largest. Start with the Wisconsin shop list and the top-rated five in the best-by-state guide.
• Tennessee. The only "largest" claim we hold is The Fabric House in Nashville, which is a decorator-fabric store. For quilting cotton, the best-reviewed shops are in the eastern part of the state — Tazewell, Cleveland, Kingsport, Alcoa, Cosby. We cannot name a largest.
• Ohio. Fabric Shack in Waynesville is the traditional answer, with the online-only caveat above. Ohio has 251 shops listed, the most in the Midwest, so there are certainly other candidates.
• Texas. Stitchin' Heaven in Quitman is our best candidate on destination pull. With 541 shops listed in the state, someone in Houston or Dallas almost certainly has more bolts under one roof — we just cannot prove it.

Corrections are genuinely welcome. If a shop publishes its square footage or bolt count and we have it wrong or missing, submit the correction and we will update the listing and this page.

5. The most-reviewed quilt and fabric shops

Review count is the one size measure we actually have. It is imperfect — a shop in a tourist town collects reviews faster than a better shop in a farm town — but a store with 500+ Google reviews is moving a lot of fabric. Google ratings and counts as listed on QuiltMap in September 2026. We have left out JOANN locations and the discount and wholesale outlets that also rank high on volume.

Notice how many of these are "Sew & Vac" dealers and general fabric stores rather than boutique quilt shops. That is what volume looks like: machines, repairs, and yardage for every kind of sewing under one roof. Mood Fabrics in Manhattan (4.4, 1,622 reviews) would sit second on this list, but it is a garment-fabric store and most quilters would not call it a quilt shop. Hancock's of Paducah (719 reviews) is missing only because its name does not contain a quilting word and our filter dropped it — it would slot in between Mill End Fabrics and Gaffney Fabrics.

6. How to plan a trip to a destination shop

A destination shop is a day, not an errand. A few things experienced road-trippers do:

• Check hours and days first. Several of the shops above sit in small towns that close Sundays, and Amish-country shops in Shipshewana and Lancaster County are often closed Sunday and shortened Saturday. Call or check the website the week of.
• Pair the shop with the other shops in range. Hamilton, Shipshewana, and Intercourse are clusters; Paducah has the museum; Branson and Las Vegas have several shops each. Put your destination in the trip planner and it will show every listed shop along the route.
• Bring a list, not a budget. The classic mistake is walking into a store with 10,000 bolts and no plan. Bring the pattern and the yardage you need for the next two projects, plus a "backing budget" for the wide backs these stores stock in depth.
• Ask about shipping. Most destination shops will ship a box home so you do not have to check a suitcase of fabric. Ask at the cutting counter before you start piling bolts.
• Time it with an event. Paducah in April during QuiltWeek, Hamilton during a retreat weekend, Shipshewana during the quilt gardens season. Check quilt events for dates, and expect hotels to book up.
