Directory changes, July to September 2026
These are changes to QuiltMap's directory. We report them separately because they measure different things.
| Listings where quilters shop | Count | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Closures identified | 150 | 129 from Google's "permanently closed" flag and 21 by QuiltMap staff. The date is when we learned of the closure. |
| Listings added | 104 | 95 newly found on Google Maps, 6 submitted by users, and 3 from our own research. These are not confirmed new businesses. |
| Cleanup removals | 218 | 110 duplicates, 46 off-category, and 62 other. These are not closures. |
Most Google-flagged closures and Maps additions came from single passes comparing our April 2026 baseline with Google's data in August and September. Treat them as April-to-September findings, not as a measure of one quarter.
What this does not tell us
- It is not a census. Of 6,876 active listings where quilters shop, 3,640 carry a quilt, fabric or sewing category, 2,101 have no category, and 1,135 carry another category from their map listing, such as store, home goods store and craft store. Some of those may be quilt retailers and some may not, so this count is broader than quilt shops alone.
- It does not show whether the number of US quilt shops grew or shrank. Comparing closures with additions would mislead, because they were found and verified differently.
- It does not give opening dates. We can't yet verify when a business opened.
Methodology and known limits
QuiltMap directory records come from public map data, user submissions and our own research. This edition was reconstructed in November 2026 from dated copies of the directory plus our listing change log, so it is an estimate of the directory on September 30, 2026. From the Q4 2026 edition on, we freeze a snapshot at each quarter's end.
- A listing restored after the as-of date may not be counted as hidden on that date.
- Corrections made to a listing after import may not be reflected.
- Google's closed flag is automated and can be wrong, so a listing marked closed may still be open. Our review of flagged listings is still under way.
- We marked another 159 of these listings closed after September 30, which this edition doesn't count. The next edition will report them, so current counts on QuiltMap will be lower than the figures here.
- Per-capita figures use U.S. Census Bureau Vintage 2025 estimates (July 1, 2025).
